School of the Year Award

CNYIB Seeking Nominations for 2011 School of the Year Award

Nominations Due by March 25

Do you know of a school that is doing fantastic work in the area of youth financial literacy? Then nominate them for the CNYIN's School of the Year Award.

This year, the CNYIN-in partnership with the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, the state foundation for credit unions in California and Nevada-will select two schools and present each with a $500 award for their innovative and successful financial literacy efforts. The winning schools will be chosen from those nominated by CNYIN members.

The School of the Year Award was developed in 2008 to honor a California and a Nevada school that has excelled at providing youth financial literacy to its students in the recent past and has specific plans to continue doing so in the future.

2010 Winners

The 2010 School of the Year recipientswere Kern High School District's Regional Occupational Center (ROC) in Bakersfield and Delta Academy in Las Vegas. Casey Woodruff of Kern Schools FCU nominated the ROC for its on-campus, student-operated credit union branch where yearly, 60 students are able to use the lessons learned while working at the branch along with sharing their financial knowledge with classmates through classroom presentations and promote financial literacy. The Delta Academy was nominated by Colleen Maurer of Silver State Schools CU because of its economic teacher, Adrianne Young, who incorporates the National Endowment for Financial Education's (NEFE) High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP) into each of her classes ensuring every student with has the "basics" before they graduate. In addition, Silver State Schools CU's staff is invited to share their expertise with the students and engage in an interactive Q & A session.
